Imago Workshops Studio Arts

HISTORY

Initiated in 1994, the Imago Workshops studio arts program was adapted from a series of master class workshops which Hugh O'Donnell developed and directed both in the United States and Europe. The program was designed for children and young adults, age 8-16, to work alongside each other, to exercise their individual talent in a context normally reserved for professional artists. The aim of the teaching was to amplify the innate and original abilities of each participant and to support physical confidence and self-expression in the making of art. The class worked on themes ranging from objective still-life to free-form imaginative inventions. Students were provided with a full range of professional art materials and were guided to create schematics and then develop them into large works of art.

From 1994 - 1998 Imago Workshops was an annual program conducted in private middle schools and high schools in Connecticut, as well as in Hugh O'Donnell's six thousand square foot studio in Bantam, Connecticut. During this period children and young adults, age 8 - 16, could work alongside each other, taking part in an individual session or they could attend a full program which consisted of five single weekend days each school term. The program was also held during the Summer as two and five day intensive workshops.

Some of the students who began working with Hugh O'Donnell at age 8 in the Imago Workshops program continued working with him throughout their high school years, moving into the adult Hugh O'Donnell Workshops program in 2002.
