Introduction

Next Workshop: March 5-9, 2015 - see SCHEDULE (select from [MENU] above).

Hugh O'Donnell Workshops was founded in 1993 as a workshop and residency program based in the beautiful Connecticut countryside. The program is uniquely dedicated to facilitate the research and production of individual artists' projects over concentrated time periods. Support is given to defining cliarifying and amplifying individual objectives and in originating practical methods for achieving those objectives. The workshops accommodate a wide range of approaches for both representational and abstract language.

Emphasis is placed on the simplest technologies and the most direct methodologies available to the visual artist. Drawing, thinking on paper, and employing the fullest use of one's body as an instrument, while working in the context of a large studio space helps participants streamline methodologies to fit personal needs.

As workshop leader Hugh O'Donnell's main conceptual focus is to help break down the blocks that prevent artists from being able to make simple, powerful, physical statements. Support is given to the organization of mental and physical energy to focus personal resources.

In 2007 the workshop program was expanded to include master class workshops led by other prominent artists and teachers. The first such addition was Susanna Coffey, the international portrait painter. The workshops are kept to a limited enrollment which allows for the necessary contact and support of individual artists.
